25th June 2-5pm @ Yoga Arch, Camberwell, London SE5
Artistic self expression can be an immensely satisfying experience and give us unexpected, non-cognitive insights into who we are. Just as our bodies become our teachers during yoga practice, creative expression and exploration can open up new vistas into our thoughts and feelings. However, accessing our creative potential can be easier said than done!
Creativity is expressed in al kinds of way but as adults, we often don’t get much of an opportunity, perhaps through lack of time and resources, to engage in creative play for the sheer joy of it.
“Creativity is nothing if not wholly individual, so a person does not have to be an artist in order to create. Life is a most viable medium. The very sense of creativity is that it represents some highly unique facet of being and perception, which, filtered through individual character and the spiritual intuition open to that character, becomes a form of enlightenment and growth for that person and others.” Ben Willis – The Tao of Art
Creativity arises naturally in states of stillness and presence that can be hard to reach when we are preoccupied by our daily ruminations and endless ‘to do’ lists. This is why yoga can be a breath of life for our inner artist. Practicing yoga cultivates our mindfulness and self-awareness though asana, pranayama, and meditation techniques. We learn to let go of ‘busy mind’ and touch into deeper stillness – the source of all creative potential. It is from this place that inspiration springs forth and it is from the ‘letting go’ that our spontaneous creativity arises.
During this workshop we will practice yoga asana, pranayama and meditation to strengthen our physical body, loosen our mental preoccupations and tap into our creative centre. Then we will have ample time to play with art materials: paints, chalk, pastels, collaging, drawing etc. and have fun exploring our inner artist.
No creative experience is necessary. All art materials will be provided but if there is anything in particular you’d like to use, feel free to bring it along with you.
