The Four Immeasurables (the Brahma Viharas)
These are the qualities cultivated when generating Bodhicitta, an enlightened heart/mind. They are qualities that operate outside the norm of self-serving motivations. Considered four qualities expressing sublime states of being: the emotional life of a Buddha. They remove tension, create peace among peoples, heal wounds, level social barriers, awaken gratitude and generosity, invigorate joy and true happiness, and relieve suffering.
Metta or Maitri—Loving Kindness, the desire for others to be happy
Karuna—Compassion, the desire for others to be free from suffering
Mudita: Rejoicing in others’ joy
Upeksa: Impartiality or Equanimity, regarding all sentient beings equally
